My Philosophy
“Music has always been a matter of Energy to me, a question of Fuel. Sentimental people call it Inspiration, but what they really
mean is Fuel. I have always needed Fuel. I am a serious consumer. On some nights I still believe that a car with the gas needle
on empty can run about fifty more miles if you have the right music very loud on the radio.”
Hunter S. Thompson
There are hundreds of quotes out there, extolling the virtues of music and they all make sense. It's hard to imagine life without it- aside from being a daily companion for many people, music is the midwife of some of our most important emotional passages.
I think the emphasis on competition in life distorts so many activities- music included- to both personal and societal detriment. It is exclusive, rather than inclusive. Many people will not become professional musicians, but that need not stop them from enjoying music- learning an instrument, listening to, performing and creating music.
My focus is on the enjoyment of, and delight in exploring music through the piano- a portal to not only a wider musical universe but a great way to share the joys of making music and enhancing our experience of life.
I have been having piano lessons with Amadis Lacheta since mid-2026. She is a brilliant teacher for a ‘returner’. When I started with her, it was 50 years since my last piano lesson. As an adult learner, I want to be treated with respect, but I don’t want my teacher to hold back on advising, correcting, or challenging me. Amadis brings a really good mix of sensitivity and honesty to her teaching, discovering my strengths and limitations, and supporting me to adjust my goals as I find my way. I have experienced enormous enjoyment through my lessons with Amadis and consider myself very fortunate to have found such an exceptional piano teacher. Marty
